Minutes – Churches Together Planning Meeting   

 September 6th 2016

at Marple URC

 

Present: Gerard & Margaret Crawshaw, Daniel Currie, Anette Haigh, Pauline Harrison, Janet Holwill, Helen Kennedy, Chris Knight, Ed McKenna, Chris McComiskey, Kath Powell, Penny Ribbeck, Alex Sanders (Chair), Judith Shield, Michael Sparrow, John Sutch, Alison Termie, Marian Thompson,

 

The meeting opened with a reading Psalm 32 and a prayer

1.   Apologies: Maureen Matthews, Elizabeth Paxton, Fred Ogden

2.      Minutes of last meeting agreed no matters arising.

3.      Treasurer’s report.  No report

4.      Report on past events:

i.                    Christian Aid week.  Elizabeth Paxton was very please with the total collected £9578.22

2 area co-ordinators have already given up for next year due to illness and age – the areas covering Cross Lane and Woodville Drive – both in the Marple area.  Elizabeth asked everyone to consider if they knew anyone who may be able to help next year.

ii.                  Marple Carnival – all went well – particularly appreciated the Children’s free games and Prayer and Pamper. Also the chairs for people to sit and chat. 

 

5.      Future events:

a. Bible Sunday Service 23rd October at Marple United Reformed Church  6.30pm  The speaker will be Rev. Canon Loveday Alexander.  There will be a collection for the work of the Bible Society. Judith Shield to liase with Alison Termie to plan the service.

b. Remembrance Day Service in Marple. November 12th   Fr. Ed is leading it and Alsion Termie will preach.

c. Christmas Cracker  December 2/3rd 

Michael Sparrow and Daniel Currie will arrange the singing at Top Lock on Friday evening. Churches Together to have their usual stalls.  Alex Sanders agreed to take the Sat 12 noon service in the precinct.

d. Hosting ‘Cross Light’ Riding Lights theatre company production in 2007

Daniel Currie has provisionally booked Friday 31st March to be held at All Saints. After some discussion it was agreed also to book Thursday 30th March if Riding Lights are not coming to other churches in this area around that time. It was felt that by advertising well we should be able to sell enough tickets to more or less cover the costs of two nights.

 

6.Chair for 2017   Daniel Currie agreed to take this on. It was suggested it be a shared position and he find one or two more people to help him.

 

7.The Cross on Cobden Edge.  Penny Ribbeck had plans to show the meeting. The replacement will be steel clad in wood so much stronger than the previous cross – also lighter to take up to the site and erect. It was agreed that Penny go ahead and cost this so an appeal can be launched.

Fred Ogden has made a start with fund raising by producing a Quiz – Everyone was encouraged to take copies to sell for £1. To be returned to Fred by December 1st .

 

8. Churches Together website.  All churches now have their own websites that can link into this. Suzanne Nolan is still waiting for contact details from some churches.

It was suggested that there also be a diary on the website with information in date order of relevant events in the area.

Marian Thompson thought she could do this and will liase with Suzanne.

 

9. Group reports:

Bible group:  Judith asked if anyone could suggest an event to raise funds for the Bible Society – she would help plan it.   

Chester Diocese is launching Y Bible later in September. This aims to encourage people within the church to help each other in their use of the bible.  There may be a programme to use from Advent to Easter. Danile will circulate more information.

Kidz Klub The numbers coming have been variable over the Summer. It now starts again for the Autumn term . It meets at Marple URC on Wednesday evenings. The children who come tend to be those who do not fit into other more traditional groups. Fr Ed leads and there are 3 other adult helpers from various churches.

FR ED IS GIVING UP IN JUNE 2007 AND IS LOOKING FOR SOMEONE ELSE TO LEAD. 

Justice and Peace  The group has been focussing on Israel /Palestine this year.

There is an exhibition of paintings by young artists from Gaza at Marple Methodist Church.  Launch Saturday 10th September 7 pm then open daily Sunday 11 to Wed 14 at 10 am – 4 pm. 

Also Lynn Boyle had been to talk to the group about Friends of the Holy Land and the family St Paul’s supports in Bethlehem.

MESS   The group is planning a Community Orchard near Marple Station .  The group meets monthly on 2nd Monday at Marple Fire Station at 7 pm.  Geoff Tomlinson is giving up as Chair in November and a new person will be needed.

 

10.  Restoring our Communities (ROC) in Marple

Margaret Crawshaw reported that Marple Methodist was planning to expand their Wednesday coffee morning and work will done under the auspices of ROC to make a permanent coffee bar and extend to become a community hub where many different things can happen. It is an ecumenical venture and the other churches in Marple have been invited to join a steering committee.

 

Connect in Queens Street  Chris McKomiskey reported that the building was open several days a week with various activites going on. People are encouraged to drop in and the atmosphere is like a big family lounge. They have deliberately been unstructured and the only publicity is word of mouth and so they can see how things develop.

Chris also had information about Marple Soup arranged by Marple People see attachment.

 

11. News from the Churches

Holy Spirit: The church celebrates it 50th anniversary next year and various events are planned. One is a Flower Festival on Friday June 23 – Sunday 25 with a Songs of Praise on the Sunday evening. It is hoped that other churches will be involved. There is a meeting to discuss this on Thursday October 13 7.30 pm at Holy Spirit Church and members of other churches are invited.

 

St Martin’s  celebrates its 150 anniversary next year and are also planning a Flower Festival the previous week to Holy Spirit  in June.

 

St Thomas Mellor is planning to start Messy Church in November.

 

All Saints :  Gareth and Lizzy Robinson from GLO in Offerton have moved to start the first Resource church in the Manchester Diocese at St Phillips.

 

St Paul’s Compstall will receive a Lottery Heritage Fund grant – to help with several of their future plans.

 

Ridge Methodist Church continues with its monthly Quiet Days on Saturdays which are well received by people from all churches.

 

URC at New Mills  Knitted Church - Church members who knit have decorated the church with their work.  This is on display between Sept. 9th and Sept. 26th.  There are special open days on 10th and 17th between 10 -12 but Alison Termie offered to open up for a group who wish to visit at another time.

 

12. Greater Manchester Churches Together are holding an area meeting for Churches Together Groups in Stockport on Thursday September 22nd  7-9 pm at Trinity Church Cheadle . The aim is meet others and share ideas. Marian is going and offered a lift to anyone else interested.

 

13. AOB

War memorials  Pauline Harrison reported that Marple Civic Society is using lottery money to maintain all the war memorials in the area particularly those that might have been neglected. If you know of a memorial near you not well maintained please contact Gillian Postill       gillian.postill@me.com

 

Reminder that Revd. Dr Val Ogden from Fiji is coming to Marple on Septmeber 21st  She is talking at St Martins at 

1 pm and at Ridge Methodist in the evening.
